At age nine, Jules Walcott developed an interest in singing and joined her 4th grade choir in order to have the opportunity to sing, ultimately influencing her decision to be a singer.
“Throughout my teenage years, I attended the School of Rock in Port Jefferson, a performance based music school where I found my love for rock and roll music,” she said. “I was lucky to be surrounded by supportive adult figures in my life.”
Walcott names her high school choir teacher as one of the supportive adult figures in her life, claiming they always pushed her to pursue a career in music. As far as musical influences, Walcott’s favorites are Jessie Reyez, Billie Eilish, Hayley Williams, Lzzy Hale and Kurt Cobain.
“I love confident female vocalist because they usually remind me of myself,” she said.
Though not all of the encounters in the music industry have been pleasant, the ones that have outweigh all the negativity that comes along with the industry.
“As a younger person in the music industry, 19 years old to be exact, being youthful has its advantages and disadvantages. Although many times I have been overlooked due to my age, I find that being young gives me an energy that someone of an older age cannot convey,” she said. “Just because I am young doesn’t mean I can’t feel the same things someone older than me can feel. I see the world slightly different then someone of an older age, and I can convey my perception through my songs and I think that is something truly beautiful.”
Walcott gained her exposure due to a Evanescence cover she sang and uploaded on Instagram going viral. The Instagram @listentothesevoices, reached out to her asking for her permission to repost the cover on their page, and Walcott agreed without giving much thought to the idea.
“A good 20 minutes later, my phone began to blow up with notifications. As I refreshed the page over and over, I started to notice the views increasing by the minute,” she said.
Within a day, the video reached hundreds of thousands of views. Since then, Walcott has put precious time into developing her solo career. Her next step will be to release her single “First At The Altar” and get back into the studio to begin the process of recording her first EP.
Walcott feels extremely lucky to be surrounded by a constant supportive family and friend group.
“They always encourage me to keep creating new music and sounds,” she said.
When asked for three words that define who she is as a person, Walcott said Unique, powerful, and sarcastically-funny.
