Four piece indie rock band Alibi prides themselves in their catchy melodies and poppy songs. Hailing from the seaside of Hastings, the band consists of Max Williams (rhythm guitar, vocals), Matt Edwards (lead guitar, vocals), Benji Meacham (bass guitar, vocals), and Wesley Brown (drums). With influences such as The Black Keys, The Libertines, and The Smiths, Alibi produces a sound that encompasses a classic alternative/indie style, from its heavy guitar and drums to its catchy melodies.
Alibi has a total of seven songs on their Spotify, all of which show the variety of alt/indie sounds they experiment with. When I first listened to the band, they really reminded me of bands such as The Wombats, and older Arctic Monkeys. This brought me back to the sounds that originally got me into this music scene, so I really appreciate their classic sound. Overall, the songs that stood out to me the most were “Space, Man”, “Place Your Bets”, and “Once In Love”, as I think these best showcase the range of sounds Alibi creates.
“Space, Man” is the band’s most streamed song on Spotify, which doesn’t surprise me, as the melodies and rhythm are upbeat and catchy. Immediately hooking the listener with a buoyant guitar and drum combo, it is definitely a song you won’t want to skip. The lyrics are also catchy, following a bit of a rhyme scheme, which I think helps them flow along the melody. The vocals are easy to sing along to as well. All of these factors make “Space, Man” a song that is easy to dance to, or even just have on in the background if you want to brighten your mood.
“Place Your Bets” is one of Alibi’s songs that most reminds me of an old Arctic Monkeys sound. From the vocals to the style of guitar and drums, it really appeals to the style that first introduced me to alternative/indie music, so if you are looking for a good throwback style, I would definitely recommend this song. With a heavier sound than some of their other songs, “Place Your Bets” uses a more alternative style. Just from hearing the slow buildup in the chorus as the vocals chant to “Place your bets”, I can tell this song would be a crowd pleaser to hear live, as it would be easy to sing back to the band as a member of the audience. Overall, I think this is my favorite song by Alibi so far.
“Once In Love” features more of an indie style. Also hooking the listener with a catchy guitar riff, this song follows the same vein of fun and upbeat songs produced by Alibi. There are a lot of unique drum beats and change ups in this song that I think really give it great danceability. I think hearing this song live would also be a fun experience, because it is easy to dance to and sing along with, and there is a slowdown near the end of the song, that builds back up into the chorus. I appreciate the indie style of this song, as it reminds me the most of bands such as The Wombats. If you are looking for an indie song to put you in an upbeat mood, I would recommend listening to “Once In Love.”
Overall, I really enjoy Alibi’s music and will definitely be adding their songs to some of my playlists. They have a very upbeat sound, none of their songs drag or feel out of place. If you like classic alternative/indie sounds and styles, I would recommend listening to Alibi.
