Vivid post-hardcore band Rozu released their latest single “Faceless” on September 15th, 2018. Rozu, meaning “rose” in Japanese, is based out of Denver, CO. This 4-piece group consists of Tim Graham (vocals), David Sundine (guitar), Henry Navarre (bass), and Brian Robertson (drums). Rozu produces a sound that is both riotous and powerful. With a chaotic yet soaring sound, “Faceless” definitely brings out the best of a post-hardcore style.
The song opens with a short electronic rhythm before breaking out in a furious, turbulent sound. The beginning lyrics, “I find myself waking up on the floor every morning/To the plans of a stranger walking out the door/I don’t know how I feel anymore/I’m a mess, I’m a trainwreck”, instantly throw you into a scenario that sets the mood for the song. These lyrics feel honest and real, not trying too hard to be overly wordy or poetic, which I think is a strong quality. The frustration that is depicted in this song could certainly evoke feelings of emptiness, exasperation, or simply understanding, from the listener. The idea of being your own worst enemy that is presented in the song is certainly something that many can relate to. I think the way this is illustrated both through the lyrics and music is something great about this song.
From the moment this song broke out, I was instantly hooked with its unique rhythm and expressive sound. “Faceless” constantly switches between different rhythms and beats, which I think makes this song impressive and interesting. Just when you think the sound is headed one way, there is another change up in the sound. I like this because it gives the song more depth, and it never feels predictable. Near the end of the song, there is a quieter moment in the song, emphasizing a drum beat and isolated vocals before kicking right back into the intense nature of its sound. I really liked this part because I was not expecting it during the first listen, and I think it was unique. Overall, the constant rhythmic changes in this song were something I really enjoyed about it.
While I don’t listen to a ton of post-hardcore, I genuinely liked Rozu’s sound and style, and it is definitely something I can see myself listening to in the future. From their honest lyrics to their strong and creative style, Rozu produces a matured sound that any post-hardcore fan will love. Check out their music, and add “Faceless” to your favorite playlist.
