Newly named alternative rock band Royal Wedding recently dropped 2 new singles, “Hippolytus” and “Falling Under.” Based out of New Jersey and consisting of Justin Leifer (guitar/lyrics), Liam Meija (drums/lyrics), Kevin Petrozzo (guitar), and Colby Crago (bass), this group presents a heavy yet melodic sound through these singles.
“Hippolytus” is my favorite between the two singles. The groovy guitar and drums are very catchy and light, as are the vocals. This is before the song builds into a heavy break of grinding guitar and harsh drums. Throughout the rest of the song, I really enjoy the different elements introduced, such as rhythmic changes in instruments, as well as bits of speaking, cheering, and singing from the group collectively. The vibe and style of this songs reminds me of old school Red Hot Chili Peppers.
“Falling Under” gives listeners a very different feeling. Between the title, as well as the slow and ambient style, this song provides a somber feeling. While "Falling Under" keeps a steady pace and drum beat for a while, it builds into harsher drums and vocals. It also begins including other elements, similarly to “Hippolytus”, such as ambient, electronic sounds near the end of the song. I think these additions give an almost disorienting feeling to the listener, which adds to the somber nature of this song. In terms of style, it made me think of songs by Tool.
I really enjoy the way Royal Wedding can experiment with two very different feelings in these singles, as well as add in cool elements that are more than just instrumental. This gives each song a good texture. I also think Royal Wedding does a good job of building momentum in these singles until they hit a heavy instrumental break.
