Bathhouse Kill Squad Album Review

Milwaukee-based punk band Bathhouse Kill Squad’s self-titled album (released in 2022) explores dark, horror-esque themes. The band includes Frankie Scinto (vocals), Chase Harrington (guitar), Brett “Betsy” Samuelson (bass) and Ethan Graves (drums). At times making fictional characters for his lyrics, vocalist Frankie introduces frightening stories featuring hitmen, serial killers, and stalkers. Coining a style that’s Rob Zombie gone punk, Bathhouse Kill Squad is a theatrical, frantic, high energy release.

“Schizo Babe” details a boy whose imaginary girlfriend is the result of his schizophrenia. The band channels a classic punk style through quick, crashing drums and gritty guitar while frenzied, shouted vocals dominate the track. The vocals embody a character, reflecting an array of emotions in quick succession.

“Softboi” describes a modern day internet incel on a quest to win over his love interest. Jumping between wild shouts and eerily laid back spoken vocals, this track characterizes phony “nice guy” mentalities. Punk instrumentals mirror these highs and lows, emphasizing the many emotional shifts.

“Discount Killer” follows a hitman who takes the jobs nobody else will do, but wishes he could pursue a different profession. With raging drums/guitar and crazed vocals, this is a deranged, no-stops track.

Merging punk rock and strange characters, Bathhouse Kill Squad creates a sinister, bold sound entirely their own. The band also released an EP Hitting the Brick Wall in April 2023, so be sure to check out both releases.
