Indiana-based loud and proud two piece queer metal band Blastcap formed in 2015. Featuring the talents of Jake Lawless (vocals/bass) and GUMBa [Seth Bules] (drums), the band refers to themselves as queer metal to add some much needed representation of the LGBTQIA+ community in the metal scene. Jake makes it a point to “come out” to the audience at every show, inspiring others to live openly and freely, and possibly change some viewpoints along the way. Blastcap’s 2020 album Angry & Hopeless & Sad encapsulates the many feelings associated with living under the MAGA administration, loss, and rebirth.
“Triggered” brims with anger through explosive screams. Dark guitar and drums collide, dripping with distortion. With a crazed, hypnotic instrumental close, this track is brutal and spacey.
“Blank Stares” slows down in tempo, sending brooding vocals to the forefront. Thick drums and bass drive the track while unflinching lyrics push through, “Coward’s daggers do not matter/How long will they live/How long can they cast these/blank stares.”
“Decapitate Your God” writhes with grim, melty guitar. Cut through with deep, haunting screams, this track sets religious ideology ablaze.
With an unabashed, fierce metal sound, Blastcap brings a resounding style to InAlternative’s own Northwest Indiana music scene. The band will be dropping a new album titled Dust & Death in the near future, so make sure to stay updated on their next releases.
