Elephants in the Storm Drain is a three piece alt/rock band from New Jersey. The band consists of Tommy Vodka (lead vox/bass), Daniel Robinson (drums), and Michael Gieger (guitar). Elephants in the Storm Drain pulls influence from all across the rock spectrum to create a new age rock sound that's never been heard before, showing the world what a three piece band can do.
Part 1 is their newest EP released on August 6, 2023, and is part one of a three part concept album. The plan is to release the other two parts over the rest of the year. Listening to Part 1 you definitely can hear the influences of bands like Black Sabbath and Metallica. The three song EP consists of "Into the Sun," "3 Legged Horse," and "Tequila?"
"Into the Sun" kicks off with some banger guitar and drums, leading into grungy vocals and what sounds like eery screams of the damned. It sets the tone for a somewhat dark and grungy song with low vocals and bass. The instrumentals are by far the star of this song. Something it reminds me of is Guitar Hero, funnily enough. The instrumentals sound like something you would hear on the game and have a blast trying to play.
"3 Legged Horse" starts a little calmer with nice and simple guitar and drums. Having these quiet, calm instrumentals allows for the vocals to shine more in this song. The instrumentals stay fairly consistent for the majority of the song which is a good change of pace from the last. The guitar riff at about the two minute mark spices the song up and is very reminiscent of classics like Black Sabbath. “3 Legged Horse” is a lovely change of pace from the first but still keeps the rock and roll going.
"Tequila?" picks the pace back up with fast but low guitar, getting back into that grungy, dark sound. This song seems to have an even balance of instrumentals and vocals, unlike the other two where one seemed to shine more over the other. The final track of the EP ties everything together and ends the EP on a good note. The drum solo at the two minute mark is phenomenal and showcases the dummers talent. It's a nice lead up to the finale of the song. “Tequila?” is probably my favorite of the three. The balance between vocals and instruments is beautiful and gives the song a nice cohesive end. Everyone seems to have more of a chance to shine and showcase their talents in this song.
Overall, Part 1 is very much a rock EP. You can certainly hear the influences of those in rock before them but with their own modern twist. I like that each song has something different to offer, highlighting the various talents of each band member. Part 1 is about as classic rock as you can get which makes for an excellent EP. The next two parts are sure to be just as thrilling and enjoyable as Part 1 and we cannot wait to hear them.
