New York singer Ilya Popenko’s new single, The Horse is Not Mine, released earlier this year. The acoustic single features a country-esque vocal delivery from Popenko, which lets the lyrics of the track shine in a unique and sonically interesting way.
The inflections in the vocals are very consonant-heavy, seemingly taking inspiration from various places throughout music’s history. The rustic acoustic guitars compliment this perfectly. Even the song's climax, with layers of electric guitar harmonies and soft drums, keeps this relaxed feel while also thematically hitting a peak. The lyrical repeat of the title line also drives this home.
