Mike & The Nerve "Fool's Gold, False Idols" Single Review

Written by Cheyenne Davey

Mike & The Nerve formed in 2017 in Gainesville, FL. The indie punk band consists of Mike Llerena (vocals), Will Diaz (guitarist/backing vocals), Nathaniel Fuller (bass/backing vocals), and Scott Marshall (drums). "The Nerve" part of their name refers to nervous energy, but also the nerve of going out and doing the seemingly insurmountable, according to frontman Mike Llerena. This is a recurring theme through Mike & The Nerve's music. The band released their latest single "Fool's Gold, False Idols" on August 25, 2023.

"Fool's Gold, False Idols" is probably one of the most classic punk songs I've heard in a while. The song is fast paced and high energy and talks about society. It’s fast and aggressive. I absolutely love the screams that are sprinkled throughout, adding to the energy of the song. Since it's so face paced, the lyrics are fairly short and concise, making them really easy to learn and sing along to. The sound of a riot about halfway through the song is so interesting and new. The whole song is set up to make you feel rage and want to scream along with them. It's a masterpiece of evoking imagery and emotions.

Overall, Mike & The Nerve showed a new and incredible side of themselves. "Fool's Gold, False Idols" is a powerful and fun song. Everything from the fast paced music to the lyrics to the perfectly planned screams make the song an absolute banger. Mike & The Nerve is a strong contender for one of the next best upcoming punk bands.
