Chicago-based indie rock artist Nick Muilaert released his newest single “Swimming Song” on July 28th, 2023. Muilaert is inspired by an array of folk artists, and he and his band put on captivating live shows that compel audiences with lyrics about coming of age and romance.
The lyrics of “Swimming Song” are nostalgic and bittersweet; they describe the directionless feeling of everybody around you leaving you behind. The track is a lax, groovy indie rocker. Originally beginning as an acoustic ballad, Muilaert decided to make it a full band track after jokingly playing a riff on electric guitar that actually sounded great. Speaking of, the guitar work here is prominent and unique; the solo is pretty, yet intense, and the whole track is laced with interesting moments. Muilaert’s voice also works well with the concept of the song, as he greatly sells the idea of feeling lost, confused, and lonely after your peers have grown up and moved on.
“Swimming Song” is a great addition to Nick Muilaert’s discography. It’s a track that’s sure to turn heads in a live setting, particularly in that final solo section. The unique energy of the song allows it to stand out as one of his best tracks, and it shows his growth in songwriting from when he first began.
