Nora Marks "Old Magick" Single Review

Chicago-based punk band Nora Marks released their single “Old Magick” via Take a Hike Records on August 3rd, 2023. Building on the experimentally dark direction of their last release The Buzzing of Flies EP, this track channels a distinctive, enigmatic energy. “Old Magick” fuses elements of punk with mystic ambience, expanding on the band’s impressive rock sound.

While the song begins with a punk style similar to the their previous releases, overall there is a new, vast feeling to it. “Old Magick” has a lot of open space, creating an airy depth. Near the end, dark, ambient elements are gradually introduced. With haunting, chant style vocals, light cymbals, and sweeping guitar, the track fades out like dissipating fog. Nora Marks maintains their punk foundation while adding new, refreshing sounds.
