RAT BATH "Call Me a Monster" Album Review

Written by Demi Marshall

Milwaukee-based emo/grunge/alt band RAT BATH recently dropped their latest album Call Me a Monster. This band of all trans-gender individuals reclaims queer-coded villains from their childhood as heroes in their storytelling, striving for visibility in the music industry. Featuring Fred Kenyon (they/them- lead vocals), Cora Bequeaith (she/her- guitar), Ivy Escobedo (she/her- bass, vocals), Róisín Shields (she/they - guitar), and Nikki Nelson (she/they - drums). They describe their sound as “Post-everything rat core,” but have also been called bubble grunge, alternative emo, dirt americana, and melodic hardcore. RAT BATH is fast, loud, and has a unique ability to seamlessly blend influences together.

The album opens with “Sweeter Than Blood, Softer Than Skin,” an upbeat, twangy punk track. Beginning with country-esque vocals and guitar, this song builds to a frantic, rock style close. “Calling All Monsters” emphasizes dynamic, theatrical vocals, their captivating nature telling a story. “Little Birds” is quick paced and mosh-able, creating the perfect chorus and energy for crowd participation. “Prayers Gone Silent” leans into the band’s heavier style. Featuring heavy drums, driving guitar lines, and dark vocals, the track maintains an artsy, hardcore vibe. RAT BATH sets no limits on their influences and creativity, making them a standout group in the alt scene as a whole.

RAT BATH is set to begin their Sweeter Than Blood Tour in 2024. All dates can be found below. Links to tickets can be found here.
