Rotundos "Ya Nos Conocen" EP Review

Chicago-based band Rotundos released their latest EP Ya Nos Conocen on May 26th, 2023. Creating an interesting blend of power-pop and post-punk, Rotundos balances the light and heavy elements of alternative rock. Ya Nos Conocen is a badass, energy-fueled addition to the Chicago music scene.

The first two songs “Another Thing (I’ve Got)” and “Tres Leches” channel Rotundo’s power-pop side. Reminiscent of artists like Wallows and Briston Maroney, these tracks give a bright, upbeat indie feel. Weaving lines in Spanish at the end of “Tres Leches,” the band includes a unique cultural element in their music.

The second half of the EP brings out post-punk qualities. Featuring heavy guitar and drums, the instrumentals are overall more prevalent in this section. “Sky Train” sets the tone for this sound and “When I’m Awake” builds on it, powered by shouted punk vocals and a frenzied guitar solo. Rotundos creates a remarkable joining of alt/punk styles on Ya Nos Conocen, displaying their talent and range.
