Shawshank Redemption Church of Christ is a Chicago-based project led by Samuel Koone. He released his debut single "APOSTATE" on March 10, 2023 and has plans for an LP late 2023. The project gives a form of relief to those affected by the evangelical church. Through his music, Samuel hopes to explore those themes of trauma from his experiences. Spotify lists the genre as "religious trauma emo."
“APOSTATE" is an emotional song. It starts with upbeat instrumentals and seemingly sing-songy, positive lyrics. In reality, Samuel is singing about the hurt and trauma he's experienced. You can hear his earnest emotions as the music calms and slows a bit. During the more upbeat parts, it reminds me of those songs they’d make you sing in Vacation Bible School. This is really fun and ironic if intentional. If not, then it's a happy coincidence. The lyrics are authentic and relatable. Many people grew up with families in the church and are no longer religious due to traumatic experiences. It's nice to have a song and artist call out the shady activities of some churches. “APOSTATE” is one of a kind, and shares an important sentiment.
Overall, I enjoy the song and the change between upbeat and calm. It's a beautiful rollercoaster of sound and leads you through different emotions. The song is relatable and something I will jam in my free time. Shawshank Redemption Church of Christ's debut is a success and we can't wait to hear more from him and explore the ins and outs of his reflections on the church.
