Sweet Hudson "Come Up Kids" EP Review

Chicago-based alt rock group Sweet Hudson released their EP Come Up Kids in January. The band explores raw, untamed emotions of the young and dumb- whether that be love, or wishing a novelty fast food item was available all year. Sweet Hudson recently took home the victory of winning University of Chicago’s Battle of The Bands. With upbeat, danceable energy, Come Up Kids is the perfect springtime EP to blast with the windows down.

“Fine” opens the EP with melodic guitar and quick drums. The lyrics reflect a positive outlook on difficult times, “But I’m fine/And the bad times last so long/And the good times they don’t last me long enough/I’m sorry but I don’t care at all.” The bright, smooth instrumentals mirror a flexible mood, bearing the weight of life’s challenges.

“Ms. Kirisaki'' is a vibrant hit bursting with energy. This track leans into the alt rock style, featuring heavier drum builds and belted vocals. Describing a youthful desire to stay forever young, the lyrics recall early 2000s memories. The song features lyrics in Japanese, a unique spin on the EP. “Ms. Kirisaki” features a full, lively sound that rises seamlessly into the next track “Running,” which brings the EP to an intense, exhilarating peak.

Sweet Hudson brings a fresh, electrifying shine to the Chicago alt rock scene. The band’s exuberant sound and style channels a lively energy that’s perfect for live shows.
