Winter TV is a Chicago-based indie project created by Danny Mulae. The self-titled EP was released on February 3rd, 2023 and was produced by and features Bridget Stiebris of the band OK Cool. These laid-back indie tracks explore a range of styles and sounds, from soft acoustic to indie rock. For fans of Del Water Gap and Wallows, Winter TV is the perfect addition to your favorite indie playlist.
“Can We Lay Down?” opens up the EP with soft guitar and drums. The song has a unique structure, with one line in place of a chorus, “Can we lay down? I’m sick of standing up.” This keeps the song at a steady pace. The drums provide a full sound, complemented by melodic guitar. This opening track works as a sampler for the variety of sounds featured on the EP, giving a blend of the indie/soft alt elements.
“Not Even” breaks through with melodic guitar and crashing drums, bringing out more of an indie rock feel. The lyrics evoke a feeling of longing,”I wish you really knew me/But not even a possibility.” Earnest vocals build to both an emotional and musical high point near the end of the song. The honest lyrics resonate with you, and the music forms a well-rounded track.
These are two favorites from the EP, but in its entirety, Winter TV forms a dreamy indie style. Balancing bright tones and reflective lyrics, each song invites you to ponder youthful or even somber memories. The relaxed style and dynamic music combine all the best elements of indie, something you can listen to passively or with intention and still enjoy.
